Job Title: Setting Out Site Engineer – Freelance (Outside IR35)

Location: Portsmouth, UK

Duration: 6-12 Months

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled Setting Out Site Engineer to join our team on a major heavy civils project in Portsmouth. This freelance role is for a 6-12 month period and falls outside IR35. The successful candidate will have experience with bulk earthworks and drainage projects and a proven track record in delivering heavy civil engineering works.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out setting out duties for bulk earthworks and drainage systems.
  • Work closely with the project team to ensure accuracy in alignment, levels, and dimensions.
  • Conduct surveys and produce as-built drawings as required.
  • Oversee the quality and compliance of all works with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Ensure accurate interpretation and implementation of technical drawings and plans.
  • Monitor and record site progress, identifying potential issues and proposing solutions.
  • Collaborate with site management, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Maintain detailed site records, including daily diaries, QA documentation, and risk assessments.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental policies on-site.
Requirements
  • Proven experience in setting out for bulk earthworks, drainage, and heavy civils projects.
  • Competence in using surveying instruments such as total stations and GPS equipment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of civil engineering principles and construction methodologies.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and related engineering software.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • CSCS card (required).
  • SMSTS or SSSTS certification (preferred).
  • Relevant professional memberships or accreditations (desirable).
